Bio
I am an associate professor, department chair, and co-director of the Augustana Jamaica Program at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. I supervise student teachers and teach courses on educational psychology and assessment, social studies methods, and educational technology. Prior to coming to Augie I taught for four years at Montana State University Billings in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice. I have eleven years of experience teaching secondary social studies, both high school and middle school, in the St. Paul Public Schools in St. Paul, Minnesota. I received my Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities in Curriculum and Instruction, Social Studies Education. My research interests include the history of boarding school education for American Indians, human rights education, standards-based grading, and technology integration in the social studies. I have worked as an evaluator for several projects, including the Partnership to Reform Inquiry Science in Montana (PRISM), an NSF Noyce Scholarship Planning Grant, and Deliberating in a Democracy (DID), an international civic education project. I also have experience coordinating and consulting on grants.
I am married and have two children and a beagle. I am an avid runner, kayaker, and former soccer player/coach with over 15 years of experience coaching boys and girls ages 4-18 in both competitive and recreational programs. I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, and getting outdoors.
